Massage Therapy is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. It is
strictly regulated by the AMA and practitioners must have a certificate from an
accredited institution before they can sit for a state license exam. Massage Therapy is
considered an “alternative health care” or “unconventional therapies".
It is the third most popular modality in the US (behind only chiropractic and
relaxation techniques).
At the beginning of this decade, consumers spent
approximately $13.7 billion on alternative health care treatments. It
is estimated that in the mid 90’s only 10% of Americans had ever experienced a
massage, by 1997 this had grown to 15%, and to 18% by the most recent two
years. It is estimated that consumers visit massage therapist 50 to 70 million times
each year. The predominant group who uses unconventional therapy is the age of 25 to 49
and has an income above $35,000 a year. An experienced massage therapist can make as
much as $60,000 a year.
